The challenges of local energy power management in Great Britain and India has brought together major stakeholders at the forefront of on-the-ground issues for an ITES workshop.
The Shakti Foundation, equiwatt (an ITES-supported SME), Renew, PTC India, the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet, as well as senior Indian state officials took part in the ‘Framework for Implementation of Local Energy Market in India’ event to explore shared issues in managing local distribution network loading.
The workshop
Hosted in Delhi, the July workshop saw ITES work with acclaimed research institute RTI International to convene key voices and, for the first time, discuss in detail how GB learnings can support the development of local energy markets in India.
In his opening remarks, Tanay Tarany, Senior Programme Manager, Clean Power, for the Shakti Foundation, explained why Local Energy Markets (LEMs) are so important.
“LEMs can enable local entities and businesses to participate in dynamic energy trading and optimise load profiles. … LEMs have the potential of creating a more flexible and responsive energy ecosystem. However, the technical intricacies, commercial aspects, and regulatory frameworks are the concerns that need to be understood and addressed.”
RTI International (India) presented on local energy markets, drawing on their extensive experience of research and development on sustainable energy projects in India. RTI has been assisting India to address both enduring and emerging energy challenges for over forty years.
ITES presented a case study of how GB is using local flexibility to manage local distribution constraints, including using flexibility services to deal with demand constraints, and flexible connections to manage generation constraints.
Powerful challenges
ITES had noted remarkable similarities in the challenges and opportunities in both India and GB, including managing generation when demand is low and managing peak demand. It became clear that flexible approaches developed in GB can be applied to India to support the decarbonisation of the Indian electricity network. This workshop served to illustrate what has been done and might be achieved.
Moving forward
A second part of the project will explore the possibility of a pilot project to test innovative solutions in this space.
