The drive towards Net Zero in India faces major challenges, not least of which are electricity network stability issues and lack of charging infrastructure.

22 March 2024

India has set an ambitious Net Zero target for the year 2070, and achieving that target will take high levels of collaboration between industry, innovation and policy makers.

That’s why ITES was keen to join other key international partners, Government of India, and utilities companies at India Smart Utility Week (ISUW), the annual flagship event of India Smart Grid Forum (ISGF).

The ISGF is spearheading the movement towards digitalisation of utilities in India, and has played a key role in bringing new technologies and solutions to India. Their annual Smart Grid week is considered one of the top five international events on smart grids, electric mobility and smart energy.

In March 2024, ISUW delegates from across the globe came together in New Delhi to discuss key elements of smart energy, including green hydrogen, smart meters, sustainable mobility, innovative technologies and disaster resilience for future grids among others.

Over 200 delegates joined ITES at the session on “Emerging Technologies for Utilities”, focusing on new technologies and their real world applications in the power sector. High level discussions centred on the technological, regulatory and societal challenges to adopting these technologies and potential solutions.

This thought-provoking session included a walk through major technological initiatives and R&D activities intended to integrate renewables energy in the generation mix, while maintaining cost-efficient, secure and resilient systems for India. This is a major challenge in a country with low power level, aging infrastructure and a lack of pan-Indian EV infrastructure norms and standards.

Delegates were also eager to hear presentations by Suresh Babu of the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and Sathya Sankaran from Urban Morph, ITES’s local delivery partner.

In his presentation, Sathya Sankaran gave delegates an insight into how ITES is uniquely positioned to foster, support and drive market-led innovation for India’s Net Zero ambitions.

Through a network of local delivery partners such as Urban Morph, ITES offers SMEs unique opportunities for collaborative UK-India innovation, and in particular, the ability to demonstrate technologies under local conditions.
